James was born in 1867 in Little Hulton.1  James' father was Henry Mather and his mother was Deborah Crompton.  Henry Mather and Sarah (Sally) Swindels were his grandparents through his father's adoption. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Joseph, Thomas, Winnifred, William, Herbert, <female>, Harriet and Sarah.  He was the fourth oldest of the nine children.



James' family with Mary Alice Jarvis

‌James and Mary were married in a civil ceremony in June 1899 in Bolton.2  They had a son named Stanley.  There are possibly more children.
