Thomas was born in December 1873 in Little Hulton.1  Thomas' father was Henry Mather and his mother was Deborah Crompton.  Henry Mather and Sarah (Sally) Swindels were his grandparents through his father's adoption. He had five brothers and three sisters, named James, Joseph, Winnifred, William, Herbert, <female>, Harriet and Sarah.  He was the fourth youngest of the nine children.  He died at 7 months old in July 1874 in Little Hulton.  He was buried in July 1874 at Wharton Lane Presbyterian.2
