Thomas was born in December 1849 in Farnworth.1  Thomas' father was Henry Mather and his mother was Margaret Wolfendale.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Elizabeth (Betty) Hardman. He had a brother and two sisters, named John, Jane and Betsy.  He was the second oldest of the four children.
