Betsy was born in September 1859 in Farnworth.1  Betsy's father was Henry Mather and her mother was Margaret Wolfendale.  Her paternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Elizabeth (Betty) Hardman. She had two brothers and a sister, named John, Thomas and Jane.  She was the youngest of the four children.
