Adam was born in 1738 in Astley and his baptism took place on November 13th, 1738 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Leigh).1  Adam's father was Ralph Mather and his mother was Margaret Green. He had two brothers and a sister, named Henry, Joseph and Alice.  He was the youngest of the four known children.
