Joseph was born in December 1733 in Astley and his baptism took place on December 23rd, 1733 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Leigh).1  Joseph's father was Ralph Mather and his mother was Margaret Green. He had two brothers and a sister, named Henry, Adam and Alice.  He was the second youngest of the four known children.
