Ann was born in June 1853 in Farnworth.1  Ann's father was William Mather and her mother was Hannah (Ann) Wolfendale.  Her paternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Elizabeth (Betty) Hardman. She had four brothers and six sisters, named John, Hugh, William, James, Mary, Mary, Elizabeth, Sarah, Catherine and Hannah.  She was the fifth youngest of the eleven children.
