William was born in December 1857 in Farnworth.1  William's father was William Mather and his mother was Hannah (Ann) Wolfendale.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Elizabeth (Betty) Hardman. He had three brothers and seven sisters, named John, Hugh, James, Mary, Mary, Elizabeth, Sarah, Ann, Catherine and Hannah.  He was the third youngest of the eleven children.
