Mary was born in 1842 in Farnworth.1  Mary's father was William Mather and her mother was Hannah (Ann) Wolfendale.  Her paternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Elizabeth (Betty) Hardman. She had four brothers and six sisters, named John, Hugh, William, James, Mary, Elizabeth, Sarah, Ann, Catherine and Hannah.  She was the second oldest of the eleven children.  She died at the age of 1 in 1843 in Farnworth.1
