John's father was William Mather and his mother was Hannah (Ann) Wolfendale.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Elizabeth (Betty) Hardman. He had three brothers and seven sisters, named Hugh, William, James, Mary, Mary, Elizabeth, Sarah, Ann, Catherine and Hannah.  He was the oldest of the eleven children.  He died at the age of 1 in 1841 in Farnworth.
