Lois' father was Joseph Mather and her mother was Elizabeth Kennerley.  Her paternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Elizabeth (Betty) Hardman. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Henry, Enock, Anna, Elizabeth and Maggie.  She was the second oldest of the six children.  She died at the age of 2 in 1860 in Farnworth.²
