Thomas' father was James Mather and his mother was Sally Smethurst.  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Sarah Watson. He had a brother and three sisters, named James, Mary, Catherine and Elizabeth.  He was the second oldest of the five children.  He died at the age of 61 in December 1857 in Little Bolton.²
