Edward's father was John Mather and his mother was Ann Alice Eve.  His paternal grandparents were Henry Mather and Sarah (Sally) Swindels. He had three brothers and two sisters, named James, John, William, Sarah and Caroline.  He was the youngest of the six children.  He died at 3 months old in June 1887 in Farnworth.¹
