  Note: Ann's mother was Betty Mather and her father James Thornley, and Ann's maiden name seems to switch from Mather to Thornley for the births of Jacob, Ellen and Joseoh, and then back again.

Jacob's father was William Ashton and his mother was Ann Mather. His maternal grandparents were Joshua Grundy and Betty Mather. He had four brothers and four sisters, named James, Joshua, Joseph, John, Sarah, Elizabeth, Alice and Ellen. He was the sixth oldest of the nine children.
