Jacob's father was William Ashton and his mother was Ann Mather. His maternal grandparents were Joshua Grundy and Betty Mather. He had four brothers and four sisters, named James, Joshua, Joseph, John, Sarah, Elizabeth, Alice and Ellen. He was the fourth youngest of the nine children.
