Ellen's father was William Ashton and her mother was Ann Mather. Her maternal grandparents were Joshua Grundy and Betty Mather. She had five brothers and three sisters, named James, Joshua, Jacob, Joseph, John, Sarah, Elizabeth and Alice. She was the third youngest of the nine children.
