  Note: Ann's mother was Betty Mather and her father James Thornley, and Ann's maiden name seems to switch from Mather to Thornley for the births of Jacob, Ellen and Joseoh, and then back again.

Ellen's father was William Ashton and her mother was Ann Mather. Her maternal grandparents were Joshua Grundy and Betty Mather. She had five brothers and three sisters, named James, Joshua, Jacob, Joseph, John, Sarah, Elizabeth and Alice. She was the seventh oldest of the nine children.
