Mary was born in May 1777 in Little Hulton and her baptism took place on May 18th, 1777 at Peel Chapel.1 2  Mary's father was Thomas Mather and her mother was Betty Flitcroft.  Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and <unknown>. She had three brothers and three sisters, named John, Peter, James, Katharine, Betty and Alice.  She was the youngest of the seven children.
