Mary was born in June 1867 in Bolton.1  Mary's father was Hugh Berry Mather and her mother was Margaret Langan.  Her paternal grandparents were William Mather and Hannah (Ann) Wolfendale. She had two brothers and a sister, named Thomas, William and Sarah.  She was the oldest of the four children.
