Sarah's father was Hugh Berry Mather and her mother was Margaret Langan.  Her paternal grandparents were William Mather and Hannah (Ann) Wolfendale. She had two brothers and a sister, named Thomas, William and Mary.  She was the second youngest of the four children.  She died at the age of 2 in December 1872 in Bolton.²
