Mary was born in June 1844 in Farnworth.¹

Mary's father was Hugh Mather and her mother was Alice Crompton. Her paternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Elizabeth (Betty) Hardman. She had two sisters named Betsy and Elizabeth. She was the second oldest of the three children.
