Hugh was born in 1822 in Little Hulton and his baptism took place on September 1st, 1822 at Peel Chapel.^1 2

Hugh's father was Robert Mather and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Hardman.  His paternal grandparents were Henry Mather and Dorothy Magson. He had three brothers and a sister, named William, Henry, Joseph and Ann.  He was the third oldest of the five children.  He died at the age of 68 on October 11th, 1890 in Farnworth.  He was buried in Farnworth.³
