Simon's father was John Hulme Jnr and his mother was Alice Stones.  His maternal grandparents were Simon Stones and Mary Hardman. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Abraham, John, Daniel, Mary, Hannah, Alice, Jane and Alice.  He was the fourth oldest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 7 in December 1858 in Farnworth.  He was buried on December 14th, 1858 in Farnworth.²
