1857 Samuel Mather 65 65 Another Samuel Mather from Bolton, who's father was Robert, as was his second son (so named after his grandfather).

1 Oct 1815, Samuel Mather, a Fuller, Bachelor, married Alice Greenhalgh, a spinster at St Mary the Virgin, Bury.  Witnesses were James Milnes and Thomas Crompton.

In 1841, Samuel, 45 (and Alice, 45), recorded as a Fuller when John was born. Fuller, a worker who cleanses wool through the process of fulling.  They lived at Cresent Row, North Bury and in 1841 had 6 children.

WARNING: There's another Samuel Mather who was an Iron Moulder with sons William, Ralph and George.
1791 - 1854 Samuel Mather 63 63 Samuel's father lived in Dean in 1793 where sister Maria was born, but by 1795 was in Great Bolton. Nanny's baptism of 1799 shows the family in Ainsworth parish.

Samuel lived in Halliwell.  Sons Isaac and John both married at Deane (1834 and 1837) with Halliwell recorded as the abode for John.

From 1818 to after 1829, another Samuel Mather and wife Ellen was a Moulder, living at 63 (and later 67) Spring Gardens (see trade directories), then Dawes St in 1841.  This was not our Samuel who was a weaver at Waterloo in 1841, although his son John did work at the Iron Works and sister Maria was at Spring Gardens in 1843.

Recorded as John Mather's father on his wedding certificates of 1837 and 1843

Samuel Kay was witness to Elizabeth's wedding to John Mather in 1843.  Still living in Little Bolton in 1851.

In 1841, Samuel and Alice (both 50) were at Waterloo. Four children; Alice (20), Happy (15), Samuel (15) and George (13) were with them as well as James Tyldsley (probably a lodger).  At this time, there’s a population of over 613K, about 59K were cotton weavers, and 800 silk weavers.  About 2,600 are involved with spinning.

In 1851, Samuel and Alice (both 60) were at 4 Simpson Street (by Waterloo Fold) with son George (21), daughter Happy Barrow (28) and granddaughter Maria Barrow (aged 7).  His son Isaac was at No. 1 Simpson Street.  Samuel was from "Great Bolton" and Alice from Turton.

1 May 1854, Samuel Mather of 4 Simpson Street died, aged 64. Samuel and his mother Happy (Cheetham when died) are buried at the Wesleyan Methodist, Bolton.

James probably lived at Toppings, Turton (unconfirmed, based on brothers Isaac and Solomon.

James was 29 when he married Happy. He may have been married before, quite possibly to Betty Lyon who died in 1789, aged only 20. James had 1 or 2 young children to care for and needed a wife quickly.  James signed his own name on both marriages, although the signatures are not a good match at least he was educatred and sign his name (5 years apart).

James and his future wife Happy were both baptised at Bank Street, Bolton although James was from Turton. Richard and Ann Mather had only been married a few months, so this may be why!

In 1799, James and Happy were living in Ainsworth (Hainsworth) when daughter Nanny was baptised.  This is about 2 miles SE of Harwood.

TO DO: Record of Sun Fire Office: MS 11936/359/555330 - Insured: John Browne and William Holden, Bolton, Lancashire, shopkeepers.  Other property or occupiers: the Woolpack Inn, Bolton (Catharine Holden, innholder); Edward Rothwell, Catharine Partington and James Mather, labourers. (20 March 1789) Held by:London Metropolitan Archives: City of London.
1803 - 1850 James Mather 46 46 This is James, son of John and Ann of Breightmet.  James's grandparents were Betty and Thomas of Little Leveer (he and Mathha were buried with them).  There is another James, son of Jane Mather of L.L. also born in 1803.

In 1833, James married Matha Austin. John (assumed to be his father) was a witness, normally a role for a brother, not father.

In 1841, James (a carter) and Martha (both 35) were at Spring Row, Breightmet with John (9), Elizabeth (7), Ellin (2).  James and Martha also had James Livesey (20) with them.  James's father, John (b.~1781), a farmer, was living nearby, aged 60.

Another James & Martha Mather nee Kay, a silk weaver from Entwistle had William Kay (48) with them in 1841.
<male> Mather <female> Challiner 1842 Mary Ann Mather <male> Mather <female> Twisse TWISSE or TWISLE (possible Entwistle)
1844 Margaret Mather 1801 - 1871 James Mather 69 69 In 1826 James (a weacer) had a bastard child born upon the body of Alice Hartley of Chorley and was ordered to pay 1s 6d per week (plus other costs) towards her maintenance.  He married her two years later (see attached images of the orders).

1835-39 (when Eliz and Mary baptised) James was living at 1 Commission Street, Bolton

In 1841, James, a cotton weaver, and Alice (40 & 35) were at Back Blackburn Street with daughters Hannah, Betsy and Mary (12, 7 & 2).

In Feb 1846, they were at Commision Street when Emma died (aged 15mo) and buried at Bolton Holy Trinity.

In 1851, James and Alice (50 & 48) were at 1 Commission Street (next to Stanley Street), Western Bolton with Hannah, Elizabeth, Mary and Wright (22, 17, 11 & 4).

In 1861, James and Alice (59 & 58) were still at 1 Commission Street with Elizabeth (27), Mary (21) and Wright (14).

In 1871. James Mather (69, Widow) was still at the house at Commission Street with daughters Elizabeth and (37) Mary (31)
1787 - 1841 James Mather 54 54 James was born about 9 months after his parents married (before Sept if 54 when died)..

James & Rachel have a DNA match to Paul Mather, but NOT me.

James's first son is also James, and both were farmers at Entwistle, probably the same farm !

In 1804, a Private James Mather, enlisted in the army, aged about 18.  He was discharged in 1818. This is another!

Weaver when children got baptised (e.g. Charles).

In Jun 1841, James and Rachel (both 54) are farmers at Sunnyside, Entwistle.  Also shown as farmer from Entwistle on son Isaac's marriage in 1839 (so possibly the wrong marriage).  With them were their younger children Nancy, Jane, Sarah, Andrew and Maria (24, 22, 18, 17, & 11), and also two illegitimate grandchildren Abel and John (5mo & 1mo).

3 Sep 1841, James Mather died of paralysis (i.e. stroke). Jenny Mather of Entwistle was present at the death (of her father).

In 1892, his youngest daughter Maria remaried (aged 63).  She recorded her father as John (not James) Mather, a Farmer.
1792 - 1879 Alice Mather 87 87 Alice appears to be born about 1788, although only Turton baptism is for 1792, so parents are unconfirmed..

9 Sep 1810, Alice MATHER, a spinster married James Mather at St Peter's, Bolton.

This is the only Alice found born in Bolton of similar age.  She appears to have no (baptised) brothers or sisters, which is strange as she was born 13 years after her parents marriage (so could be wrong birth record or records lost, or a widow).

Could she be a widower, married before Samuel in 1810 (after 1804)?  Cant be Alice Makinson that married Nathan Mather in 1809 or Alice Calderbank married Thomas Mather in 1805 as they had a long and fruitfull marriages. There are no other candidates for an Alice from Turton.

Alice, wife is present on 1841 and 1851 census with Samuel and family.

The 1851 census shows Samuel and Alice (both 60) at 4 Simpson Street, was from Turton.  Her son George (21, a Collier), daughter Happy Barrow (married, 28, piecer) and grandaughter Maria Barrow (7) were living with them.

In 1871, Alice (82) was a boarder at 67 Blackbank Street, living with her daughter Happy and Phineas Shuttleworth and family. 3 doors away at No 73 was her son Samuel and Ann Mather.  Between them at No 71 was James Cunliffe Hamer and his wife Happy Hamer.  How is this other Happy person related?
1792 - 1872 James Mather 79 79 There's a James that married Ellen Mercer in 1797, and had their children baptised at Dukes Alley Chapel (NC) but this is obviously another.  From 1806, James's father Solomon also started using Bank Street.

28 Nov 1836, James married Mary Heaton.  Wright Crompton, b.~1810 the L.B. Blacksmith was witness.

In 1841, James and Mary (45 & 50) are at Poaket, Deane.

James Mather is on the 1841, 1851, 1861 (married to Mary) at Pocket, Rumworth, and 1871 census (widowed), born Turton with the correct age.

In 1861, James and Mary (68 & 69) are at Pocket, Rumworth.  James and Betsey Banks (24 & 26) are neighbours, with a possible DNA trail..

The 1871 census also shows James (78, Wid) is with his sister Ann (50) born Hall-i’th’-Wood (the same as brother Solomon).  Ann Scott (41) is a Lodger.

James (45) and Mary (50) ware living at Pocket, Rumworth, (There's a Pocket Nook Rd at Chew Moor), Rumworth in 1841, 1851 and his wife Mary died there in 1871.

John Mather (15, MS) was the only other Mather in Rumworth in 1841.  He was probably James's son from an earlier marriage.
1774 - 1848 James Mather 73 73 James may be born Rivington as baptism date matches.  However, I would expect to see a Stephen in the family.  Burials of his daughters show he lived in Little Bolton. James Mather, born 25 Oct 1774, son of William Gresgon and Elizabeth Mather seems more likely, as baptised at Bank Street Unitarian.

Marriage to Ellen shows "James Mathers" is a joiner, but James Mather (65) a Weaver in 1841 married to Charlotte (61) at Little Bolton Hall.
1800 James Mather 21 Jan 1816, another James Mather, a Butcher, married Alice Taylor at Bolton St Peter's.

In 1824, when Ann was born at Pendlebury, James was a weaver
~1753 James Mather James & Betty may be from Qularlton.

James and Betty lived at Turton.  They were at "Rock" when James was born, and later at "Goose Cote Hill" for Isaac and Margaret.  Goose Cote Hill was occupied by the Poor-law Guardians of Bolton Union before being sold in 1863.

This is NOT the James who married Esther Mason and later Hannah Howarth, (possible brother and witness to Peters marriage) as that James was literate.
1757 - 1794 James Mather 37 37 James is probably the son of John and Mary Mather from Whitefields.  The age matches, its the nearest parish (other than Bolton), and the first two children (Mary and John) are named after his parents.

In 1780 when the first John was baptised, they lived at Little Bolton, but Great Bolton in 1782 when he was buried.
~1593 James Mather In William's Will he names his 5 sons as "Nicholas, John, Richard, William and James" in that order, as also identifies the three latter being the younger.  Therefore, it is reasonable to assume James is the youngest. ~1560 - 1614 William Mather 54 54 William Mather of Turton is the only Turton Mather in the 1573-1650 Abstracts of Mather wills (pdf) booklet.  He left an estate valued at £165 to his wife and five sons.

He was buried "intra ecclesiam"
~1560 - >1614 Margaret Mather 54 54 ~1580 - 1629 Nicholas Mather 49 49 Nicholas of Turton left a Will (1630).  There is another Nicholas Mather Will of 1614, an uncle perhaps! ~1585 John Mather John was the executor of Williams son, and probably the second oldest (as second named of the five in the will). ~1589 Richard Mather In William's will he names his 5 sons as "Nicholas, John, Richard, William and James" in that order, as also identifies the three latter being the youngest. 1591 - 1639 William Mather 48 48 In William's will he names his 5 sons as "Nicholas, John, Richard, William and James" in that order, as also identifies the three latter being the youngest. ~1580 - >1654 Susannah Thorpe 74 74 Susan Mather widow in Turton (page 75) and Nicholas Mather are both rederenced in the Brownlow Family of Hall i'th' Wood booklet by Ince Anderton, 1911) 1611 - ~1612 William Mather 1 1 Buried "intra ecclesiam" 1610 Margaret Mather 1613 - 1654 James Mather 41 41 It is this James Mather and not his uncle James who had the Will dated 1654.  James referes to his brother Thomas, wife Ann and his mother, who was still alive, in his Will. 1615 William Mather 1618 Elizabeth Mather 1622 - 1662 Thomas Mather 39 39 William Mather D. 1770 Hannah Mather D. 1726 Margret Mather Thomas and Margaret died just 5 days appart. ~1675 - 1728 Margaret Greenhalgh 53 53 Thomas Mather & Margarett Kellet of Anglezarke D. 1726 Thomas Mather Thomas and Margaret died just 5 days appart. 1706 Mary Mather D. 1720 Thomas Mather 1703 <child> Mather ~1743 - 1796 Thomas Mather 53 53 Thomas may be the brother of James Mather who married Martha Entwistle. They had the same witnesses; Thomas Vickars & registrar James Livesey.

In 1765 Thomas fell into hard times.  On 15th June 1765, following Poor Law, an order (petition) was made returning Thomas, his wife Elizabeth and their daughter Mary, aged 8 months from Longworth to Turton.

Thomas was a Widower when he married Hannah Platt on 1 Jan 1781.  Marg't, wife of Thomas Mather of G.B. was buried 21 Feb 1779.
1747 - 1779 Margaret Rothorn 32 32 Margaret Rosthorn (on Bishop's tran) or Rawsthorn, signed Rostren (on marriage record).

~1743 - 1769 Elizabeth (Betty) Smalley 26 26 Assumed to be Betty, based on Turton "wife" Burial record of 21 Jan 1769.  It appears she died very soon after giving birth to Jane.  Perhaps this is why Thomas remarried only 8 months later. 1764 Mary Mather 1802 - 1863 James Mather 61 61 James became a Muslin Manufacturer in Little Bolton, and was that in 1840 when he married Martha Bentley.  His father was John Mather, a shopkeeper. His brother(?), Charles Mather was witness at their marriage.

In 1839, a license was prepared for the marriage of "James Mather" a manucacturer to "Martha Bentley", and was placed in the newspapers on 29 Aug 1840 and 5 Sep 1840

In 1841, James was recorded as a publican (40) in Dean's Gate, with his wife "Matty" (30), Sarah Nightingale (25, F.F.), John Yeoman (20, a Hatter) and William Coonnaly (30, Irish).  He had presumably taken over the Inn from Matty's father William Horrocks in 1840 when he married Matty.  Two years later, both Matty and her father died.

In 1845, James Mather (Widow, son of John a Shop Keeper), manufacturer of Halliwell, married Hannah Isherwood (Widower).

Aged 49 in 1851, a Cotton Manufacturer from Little Bolton.
Now married to Hannah (born 1814 from Edgworth). From Little Bolton and a Cotton Manufacturer, employingh 65 men.

In 1861, James, a Counterpane Manufacturer and Hannah (59 & 46) were at 14 Falcon Street, Little Bolton with John (16) and Nancy (15).
~1640 John Mather ~1640 Ann ~1720 Robert Mather ~1720 Anne Mires 1773 - >1851 James Mather 78 78 James was married to Mary from Scotland in 1841 and 1851.

James may be the son of Thomas from D.L.  James was left nothing in his father Thomas' will of 1823.  Perhaps because he had moved away from the family.  However, birth is 2 years out, but closest match.

James and Mary, Crofter (when married) or Ag Labourer (1841 census) at Mount Pleasant, Edgworth in 1841.
~1640 - >1690 James Pendlebury 50 50 ~1667 Mordicai Mather "Henry Mather of Kersley, brick layer; Adam Oldham of Kersley, dyer; Mordicai Mather; Thomas Mather; John Peers of Glazebrook, yeoman; " are mentioned in disputed probate papers of Ralph Egerton esq of Turton, 16-Jan-1702. 1684 - 1685 Peter Mather 1 1 1690 Richard Mather ~1690 Ellin Mather Thee is a record showing "An abortion of Richard and Ellin Mather of Turton", dated 20 April 1907. ~1672 - 1672 Margaret Mather 1670 - 1670 Margarett Mather ~1700 John Mather John of G.B. was a Husbandman in 1724 and an Inn Keeper in 1725 (when Mary was buried). Mary 1724 - 1725 Mary Mather 9m 9m 1732 Ann Mather If Ann married, it was probably John Thornley, married in 1754 at Deane and had Richard (1755), Margaret (1758), Mary (1760) and Ann (1765) of L Lever, Bolton. ~1700 John Mather Beatrice 1722 Jane Mather ~1660 Henry Mather ~1700 William Mather ~1700 - 1770 Hannah Smith 70 70 ~1740 Joshua Mather Joshua "Madder", was married at Lower Darwen ~1740 Margaret Fielden 1764 Mary Mather 1776 Margaret Mather 1773 - 1774 Joshua Mather 1 1 1779 Betty Mather 10 Dec 1798, Betty married John Whitaker at Bamber Bridge, Walton-le-Dale. 1781 - 1851 John Mather 69 69 John Married Margaret Smith 1788 - 1790 Richard Rigby Mather 1 1 1768 Sarah Mather 1770 Hannah Mather 1786 - 1859 James Mather 73 73 From 1804 till 1818, James was a Private in Coldstream Regt of Foot Guards, Waterloo. He was discharged 14 Dec 1818, aged 32, with "good conduct". He was about 5'6", brown hair, hazel eyes and a dark complexion. He was a weaver.

In 1841, Alice and James (both listed as 55 although Alice is before James as older) were with their mother Betty (82) on Cannon Street, Bolton.

In 1851, James Mather (60) and his sister Alice Jones (62) and brother Wright Mather (50) were still living on Cannon Street, W Bolton.
1803 - 1870 Mary Mather 66 66 No DNA matches to this family, so unsure who's Mary's parents are.  There are a couple of possibilities, but not the Mary of same age that died in 1817, aged 14.  Most likely is daughter of John Mather and Betty Edge, as they had a son John and daughters Betsy (all died as infants) ~1750 Robert Mather Mary 1781 Sarah Mather ~1780 John Peel ~1725 James Mather James is from Turton ~1725 Jennet Bromly 1827 - 1872 James Fogg 45 45 In 1841, James was a gringer, living in Water Street, Bolton West with Harriet Hill (30), John Hill (5), Christania Hill (1) and brother William Fogg (8).

Maria and James (both born Bolton), had moved to Dukinfield by 1861
1830 - 1887 Maria Mather 57 57 Who was Maria, assumed daughter of Thomas who she was with in 1841.  She married at Christ Church, Bolton, just a year or two after Samuel and William, sons of John Mather (1823-1892) but no other indication the family is related.

"Mariah" daughter of James & Rachel Mather of Entwistle (by Edgworth), born 17 Sep 1829, baptised 27 Sep 1829 is not her.  This Maria, also aged 11, was at Sunnyside farm, Edgworth with her parents in 1841.
1852 John Thomas Fogg John in 1851, but John Thomas in 1861 1853 Ellen Fogg 1855 Christiana Fogg 1858 Harriet Ann Fogg 1860 Susannah Fogg 1864 Elizabeth Fogg 1866 William Fogg 1870 James Fogg 1799 - 1835 Margaret Isherwood 36 36 There are several reasons why Margaret may be the mother of Maria, but it is still largely speculative.  Mary daughter of Thomas and Marg't is the closest to 1830 for any Bolton baptism.  Also if Thomas's wife died before 1841, Margaret wife of Thomas died in 1835, aged 36.  This is the closest burial for a wife of Thomas Mather at St Peters, and the abode is Great Bolton (not Sharples).  Finally Thomas & Margaret are not already in the larger Mather tree, so could fit. 1872 Samuel Fogg 1806 - 1835 John Fogg 29 29 1808 - 1870 Harriet Rosthorn 62 62 Harriet was a widow at 32 Greenhalgh Street, L.B. in 1861 1812 - <1861 John Hill 49 49 1833 William Fogg In 1851, like his step-father John Hill, William Fogg was also a Machine Grinder. 1835 John Hill 1841 Christiana Hill 1843 Thomas Sykes Hill 1846 Benjamin Hill 1852 George Hill 1794 - 1848 Thomas Mather 54 54 Thomas Mather (50) was at Balshaw Street, Bolton West in 1841 with (assumed) daughter Maria (11).  His wife Margaret (of G.B.) had died in 1835 aged only 36.  Margaret was a widow when she married Thomas, so both may have had earlier marriages.

It is another Thomas Mather (born about 1803) who married Margaret Tinsley in 1825.
1697 - 1777 John Mather 80 80 John's father was Thomas Mather and Anglezerk, and John probably stayed here.  Margaret's baptism of .1727 as John of Anglezerk.

On 8 Jan 1716, John Mather, son of Thomas Mather of Turton had a female bastard child recorded at Bury Patitions.  The mother may have been Ann Knowles.  John married Ann Knowles in 1722.

John was a Yeoman in 1726 (when Susannah was buried).
1790 - 1819 John Mather 29 29 There are no Bolton marriages for John and Mary 1805-1815. John was from either Walton-le-Dale or Leigh (based on marriage records). Leigh has now been eliminated (that is John the Mechanic).

In 1811, John married Mary at Walton-le-Dale, St Leonard.

John died at Kittlingburn, Walton-le-Dale aged 29.  Burial records also show Thomas (1750-1821) and Jane Mather (1750-1823) died at Kittlingburn, Walton but are they the same parents?
1789 Mary Ashworth 1812 Mary Mather 1802 - 1865 Joshua Mather 63 63 In 1823, Joshua Mather (possibly another) was witness to the marriage of Catherine Mather to James Berry of Chorley at Walton-le-dale.

In 1827, Joshua arrived in the USA

In 1831, Joshua was Naturalised in Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts, USA.  His birthplace was recorded as Walton, Lancaster, GB
1810 - 1862 Elizabeth Kay 52 52 1835 Margaret Mather 1843 - 1909 Thomas Mather 66 66 Joshua (and John) is a reoccuring name in this family.  As Thomas and Catherine had a son Joshua, it is likely that this family is correct.

In 1871, Thomas and Catherine (28 & 27) were at Salt Pie Row, Bolton with John (5), Catherine (3) and Margaret (2mo)

In 1881, Thomas and Catherine (both 37) were at 10 Rigby Street, Bolton with 7 children

In 1911, Catherine, 67, was a widow.
1846 John Mather There is a John Mather born about 1847 who emigrated to Fitchburg, Worcester, Massachusetts and this could be him as there is some evidence his father may emigrated to Massachusetts. However, this John's parents were John and Mary (on his marriage record). 1833 - 1841 Catherine Mather 8 8 Catherine was 8 in 1841

Catherine wasnt with the family in 1851, died August 1841.
1766 - 1829 Thomas Mather 63 63 Catherine 1765 Jenny Rigby 1840 - 1886 Elizabeth Mather 45 45 This Elizabeth is the daughter of Joshua, the mechanic.

This Elizabeth has her mother shown as Elizabeth KAY, and was born Dec 1840 (registered 9 Jan 1841). There is another Elizabeth, 4  months older, the daughter of Charles and Mary Dawson.

In June 1841 Joshua (35) was a Shop Keeper and Elizabeth was 5 months (and brother Thomas married here 3 years later).

In 1863, Elizabeth Mather of Bolton married George Bateman at Christ Church, Bolton.

In 1871, George and Elizabeth Bateman (both 30) were living with Joshua Mather (65). They had a daughter Margaret J (3).

In 1911, Catherine (67, born Warrington) had been married 46 years and had 12 children, 9 still alive.  She still had Elizabeth (38), Maude (24) and Fred (22) with her at 478 Higher Bridgman Street, Lever.

In 1920 Catherine died in Little Bolton, recorded age 74.
1865 John Mather 1867 Catherine Mather 1871 Margaret Mather 1873 Elizabeth Mather 1875 Joshua Mather 1877 Emma Mather 1880 Thomas Mather ~1762 - 1772 Joshua Mather 10 10 1760 - 1777 John Mather 17 17 1803 Ann Mather Based on other trees, Ann may have married Owen Borsay (1804-1871) at Prestwich St Mary (tbc) 1809 Elizabeth Mather 1807 Peggy Mather ~1704 - 1765 Peter Mather 61 61 Richard and Peter could be the son of Peter Mather, who died Turton 1765, (based on Peter being an uncommon name).  Also, there is a baptism of Ann, daughter of Peter and Elizabeth of Turton in 1730.

We know from Peter's marriage and Ann's baptism, Peter was a Weaver.

In 1754 "Betty Mather - Wife of Peter Mather" died at Turton.

In 1757 it appears that Peter may have remarried Betty Mayo and had more children.  However, if this is the case, then he had moved to Little Hulton and died thgere 3 Dec 1789 (aged about 85, so unlikely).
1824 Robert Knowles In 1854, Robert (28) married Mary Ann Mather (22).  Robert was the son of Robert Knowles, a farmer

There is another Knowles and Mather family of Bolton (Richard and Jane married 1868) who had Lucy in 1870 (when Ellen was born).

In 1871, Robert (a Carter) and Mary A (45 & 40) were at 3 George's Terrace, Little Bolton with Alice (14), Elizabeth (8), Francis (6), and Ellen (1).
1830 - 1879 Mary Ann Mather 49 49 In 1851, Mary Ann (21) was living with her unmareried sister Ellen (33) and her 3 children in Hindley near Wigan.

In 1852, Mary Ann Mather was 21 and living in Halliwell when she married Robert Knowles at Deane. Her father was John Mather, a Weaver.

In 1861 and 1871, Mary A was in Little Bolton with Robert and family (so not the Mary with brother John in 1871 at Hindley so may also not be the Mary with sister Ellen in 1851).
~1785 John Mather There are not many John Mather & Alice marriages around.  The only others are John Mather and Alice Goldbourn in Wigan in 1803 and John Mather and Ann Entwistle in 1824 at Blackburn.  Therefore all Prestwich and Bolton baptisms are likely to be for this John and Alice.

In 1841, George (25) was living with his (assumed) father John Mather (65) and Frederic Fish (20) in Derby Street, E Bolton.

In 1852, when Mary Ann married, John was a weaver.

1858 - 1858 John Knowles 1860 - 1860 Jane Knowles 1865 - 1916 Francis Knowles 51 51 The first Francis died in 1863, aged 9.  This Francis Knowles, born early 1865, is the "replacement"

In 1881, Francis (16) was a lodger at No 24 Villiers St with Arthur and Alice Boydell (his sister) and family.
1867 - 1867 Robert Knowles 2m 2m 1863 - 1871 Elizabeth Ann Knowles 8 8 1664 - 1732 Thomas Mather 68 68 Yeoman shown on daughter Margaret's and son Thomas's burials.

4 Years after Thomas married Margaret, theres another marriage for Thomas Mather of Anglezarke to Margaret Kellet.  Is this the same person?

6 April 1680, Thomas Mather of Dunscar (near Walmsley Chapel and Egerton) for £36 assigned to Christopher Horrox of Turton, Yeoman, moiety of Dunscar, Tenement in Turton, in trust by mother Ann Mather of Thomas Mather, to .... There were no Mather births in Sharples in 1837-38, so she probably didnt die in childbirth, so childless.
1820 Mathew Crook Mathew was born at Hall-i’th’-Wood and Married Margaret Mather daughter of Thomas, so a possible grandaughter of Solomon Mather.

Matthew was the son of William Crook, a Mill Wright.

In 1841 Matthew (20) was at Slope-o'th' Lane near Hall-i’th’-Wood with parents William and Sarah (55 & 50) a Mill Wright and 7 other siblings.

In 1841, there appear to be no single Margaret Mathers, daughters of Thomas.  All on the 1841 census seem to be married.

In 1861, Mathew Crook and Margaret (44 & 40) were at Spring Lane, Radcliffe (no children), but had Elizabeth Turner (20), a boarder living with them.  Neighbours were Samuel & Elizabeth Mather.
