James at Bradshaw Chapel and Belmont Lives with: In 1841, James (60) & Sarah (58) were neighbours of son Henry & Sarah at Raodfield Nook, Rossendale
in 1861, James (82) was living with his son Henty Named After: Names after grandmother, Sarah Lord (and mother Sarah Ingham) Other: Both James Cunliffe died in 1858
One in Little Bolton (aged 74) and the other Sharples (aged 80) 1811 - 1886 Helen (Ellen) Cunliffe 75 75 Ellen's mother was Ann Cunlive (probably Cunliffe).  She was probably the illegitimate daughter of Ann Cunliffe so may not be the daughter of Ann Gibson and James.

Another possiblilty is that Ellen (baptised Mary) is the daughter of John Cunliffe and Elizabeth Bromley who married in 1795 (see Landmantracy tree).

Named "Ellen Cunlive" on marriage.  A family story handed down is "Ellen Conliff worked in a Mill in Lancashire, England.  Her mother died, and her father remarried.  Her step-mother was cruel to Ellen and her sisters wouldn't give them things.  William Mather married her to get her away from her step-mother."

Brother Robert Mather is witness at the marriage is Bolton parish, so this is likely the correct marriage.

In 1870, George and Helen (37 & 35) were a Hotel Keepers, both born England at Baltimore.  With them were Samuel, Nathan and William (24, 22 & 16)

Ellen died in 1886 at Cross Keys, Baltimore.
~1780 James Cunliffe In 1801, James was a Cordwainer (shoemaker) of Great Harwood when he married Ann Gibson. 1781 - 1815 Ann Gibson 34 34 1804 - 1841 Peggy Cunliffe 37 37 Peggy married Robinson Lang on 30 June 1823 at Accrington. 1815 Mary Cunliffe In 1841, Mary Cunliff was living with her married (assumed) sister Peggy Lang.

However, Mary may have been the daughter of George Cunliffe and married William Damsbotton, a slater, in 1846.
1811 - 1863 Robert Cunliffe 51 51 Robert was the son of James Cunliffe, a labourer and Betty, not James and Ann.

13 Aug 1838, Robert, Toll Keeper of Turton, married Ann, spinster (daughter of John Heaton).  Roberts father was James Cunliffe, a Labourer.  They had a daughter Jane baptised in 1839 at Blackburn (Roman Catholic).

In 1841, Robert a Toll Keeper and Ann (30 & 31) were at Chadshaw Inn (?) with Jane (2) and James (4mo).

In 1851, Robert and Ann (39 & 43) were at Hells Gate Tollbar, Sharples with Jane and James (11 & 10) and father James Cunliffe (73).

Their son James (born 1841) was a Blacksmith (in 1861, 1864, 1871, 1876).
1801 James Cunliffe James married Alice Fielding by license on 1 April 1827 at Great Harwood.  Alice was 2 years older and from Entwistle (1851 census).

By 1861 and 1871, James was an emploter of over 140 workers at a Calico Printer and Bleach works.

James and Alice lived into their seventies.
1797 - >1851 Jenny (Jane) Chambers 54 54 James and Jenny were married with the consent of parents.  At least one may have been a minor.  However, all the St James church records show consent of minor, so it may mean nothing!

By 1825 (son James and daughter Mary's baptism), 1841 & 1851, Jenny (or Jinny) was known as Jane.
1808 - 1876 Ann Heaton 68 68 Ann's father was John Heaton ~1764 James Cunliffe James had a spot of bother marrting Ann.  The marriage by Banns was planned for 11 Oct 1784 at St Mary, Blackburn, it was entered into the register, but never happened.  There were no signatures and the entry was crossed out.  Instead, they married the following week (17th Oct 1784) at St Bartholomew, Great Harwood by Banns (although Blackburn has the record over-written "Licence Granted"). ~1764 Ann Proctor ~1800 Alice Fielding 1799 - 1857 Robinson Lang 58 58 1820 Nancy Cunliffe 1829 Alice Cunliffe Alice daughter of James and Jenny was baptised at Church in 1829  1819 John Cunliffe 1831 Robert Cunliffe Son of James & Jinny of Top, a Weaver 1823 Ben Cunliffe 1836 - 1861 Ellen Cunliffe 25 25 1796 - >1851 James Cunliffe 55 55 James was the son of Henry and Hannah (see 1861 census for daughter Mary) 1839 Mary Cunliffe Mary was born at Oswaldtwistle, where several Cunliffe families live.

Mary was at Oswaldtwistle with her grandparents Henry and Hannah Cunliffe (68 & 64), retired farmers in 1861. However they are too young to be the parents of her father James (b.1796).
1834 Henry Cunliffe ~1778 Mary Hargreaves 1817 Alice Cunliffe 1824 - 1827 Mary Ann Cunliffe 3 3 1825 - 1844 James Cunliffe 19 19 1825 James Cunliffe In 1881, James and Mary Cunliffe were both 54, born Lower Booths, Lancashire and living at Collinge Fold, Lower Booths. 1792 - 1825 James Cunliffe 33 33 James Cunliffe of Ewood Bridge married Mary Taylor of Oakenwood (?) ~1792 Mary Taylor 1825 James Cunliffe 1811 James Cunliffe The James, a Corwdwainer when he married Ann Gibons may be this James - TBC.

In 1841, James and Sarah (both 30) were at Newchurch, Haslingden with Sarah (3), James (1), and Elizabeth (2mo)
1811 Sarah Pickup 1822 Sarah Ingham Sarah is the daughter of Omerod Ingham and Mary Taylor, who married at Haslingden in 1820 1821 - 1876 Henry Cunliffe 55 55 Henry was the youngest of the 6 children, all baptised the same day, 1 June 1823 at Goodshaw.

Daniel was an Artist and went to live in Worth Sussex (1841) and then Portsea, Hampshire (1851-61) with his wife Betty M Cunliffe.
1811 - 1879 James Cunliffe 68 68 Margaret appears to be illiegitamate. so perhaps they married after 1838 whe she was born, not in 1834.

James was a Printer and Colour Maker from Chorley.  He moved to Bradshaw Chapel, Turton about 1840, and later about 1845 to Belmont, Sharples.

In 1861, James and Sarah (50 & 49) were back at Chorley.  James was a publican at the Anchor Market Street.

In 1796, James Cuncliffe of Lower Booths married Betty Lonsdale.  Two years later, he married Betty Cuncliffe.

Then two years later again (Jan 1803), James Cunliffe of Lower Booths married Betty Lord of Higher Booths. There are no burial records for any of the three Betties.

In 1811, James Cunliffe and Sarah Lord, both of Higher Booths, married.

In 1823, James was from Oakenhead Wood when all six children were baptised (showing two mothers), but was Robert also his?  Robert (or two Roberts) was baptised twice in 1812 with father James and Mothers Betty and Sarah.

In 1841 James and Sarah (60 & 58) were at Roadfield Nook, Rossendale, and neighbours of son Henry

In 1851, James (71) was a gentleman with wife Sarah (62) and 6 grandchildren (his son Henry's). This cannot be the same James that had the son Robert the Toll Collector (who was in Sharples with his father James).

This is possibly Robert and Ann of Haslingden.  They had George (1819), Robert (1821), Ann (1822) and John (1824).

In 1851 Henry and Sarah (45 & 42) from Newchurch had oldest son Robert (18) and others.. This is another family with a Robert who married in 1831
Ann Cunliffe 1820 Mary Cunliffe 1819 - 1894 George Cunliffe 74 74 In 1845, George married Mary Heys at St. Mary, Blackburn

There is no birth registered for Jane Cunliffe (MMN = HEATON), so possibly illegitimate or adopted.  However, the R/C baptism does confirm mothers full name and DOB.

williamball1 has a 11cM DNA match to Paul Mather and Paul and Jane in his tree. However, he is not descended from Robert Cunliffe.

1779 - 1819 Sarah Cunliffe 40 40 1785 - 1858 James Cunliffe 73 73 James was possibly baptised at Bolton, son of James and Ann.  There do not appear to be any other siblings from Bolton.   More likely though he as the son of William Cunliff and Susanna Booth (as both uses Bank Street and he has a daughter Susannah).

James Cunliffe was a School Master.  He son John was also a School Master at Bolton.

James was married to Ellen (Nelly) Hill (or Hall).  Several birth records record the mother's maiden name as HILL.  Also on Alice's birth, it is shown as HALL and they lived at Astley Bridge.

In 1819, Nelly and James had a daughter Mary.  James was a School Master.

25 Jan 1825, James Cunliffe married Maria Hall at St Peter's, Bolton by license.  James was a widower.

Nelly was possibly buried in 1818 or 1821 at Wardleworth, the daughter of James Hill.
1819 Mary Cunliffe 1815 - 1888 Susanna Cunliffe 72 72 1813 Alice Cunliffe 1811 Elizabeth (Betsy) Cunliffe Betsy when married, but Elizabeth on census records
