John was born in 1735 in Austonley and his baptism took place on June 11th, 1735 in Holmfirth.1  John's father was John Crosland and his mother was Hannah Garthside. He had eight brothers and five sisters, named Richard, Samuel, John, Thomas, John, Joseph, James, Joseph, Hannah, Anne, Mary, Grace and Sarah.  He was the fourth oldest of the fourteen children.
