James' father was John Crosland and his mother was Hannah Garthside. He had eight brothers and five sisters, named Richard, Samuel, John, John, Thomas, John, Joseph, Joseph, Hannah, Anne, Mary, Grace and Sarah.  He was the second youngest of the fourteen children.  He died at the age of 2 in May 1751 in Austonley.  He was buried on May 12th, 1751 in Almondbury.²
