Joseph's father was John Crosland and his mother was Hannah Garthside. He had eight brothers and five sisters, named Richard, Samuel, John, John, Thomas, John, Joseph, James, Hannah, Anne, Mary, Grace and Sarah.  He was the youngest of the fourteen children.
