Joseph was born in 1751 in Austonley and his baptism took place on September 21st, 1751 in Holmfirth conducted by Vicar Rishton.1  Joseph's father was John Crosland and his mother was Hannah Garthside. He had eight brothers and five sisters, named Richard, Samuel, John, John, Thomas, John, Joseph, James, Hannah, Anne, Mary, Grace and Sarah.  He was the youngest of the fourteen children.
