Sarah was born in January 1748 in Austonley and her baptism took place on May 16th, 1748 in Holmfirth conducted by Vicar Rishton.1  Sarah's father was John Crosland and her mother was Hannah Garthside. She had nine brothers and four sisters, named Richard, Samuel, John, John, Thomas, John, Joseph, James, Joseph, Hannah, Anne, Mary and Grace.  She was the third youngest of the fourteen children.
