John was born in 1739 in Austonley and his baptism took place on May 12th, 1739 in Holmfirth.1  John's father was John Crosland and his mother was Hannah Garthside. He had eight brothers and five sisters, named Richard, Samuel, John, Thomas, John, Joseph, James, Joseph, Hannah, Anne, Mary, Grace and Sarah.  He was the sixth oldest of the fourteen children.
