Martha was born in 1825 in Upperthong.1  Martha's father was Edmund (Edward) Crosland and her mother was Nancy Sykes.  Her paternal grandparents were John Crosland and Elizabeth.  Daniel Crosland and Mary Kinder were her grandparents through her father's adoption. She had three brothers and three sisters, named William, John, Richard, Elizabeth, Ann and Ellen.  She was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
