Ellen was born in 1835 in Austonley and her baptism took place on May 31st, 1835 in Holmfirth.1 2  Ellen's father was Edmund (Edward) Crosland and her mother was Nancy Sykes.  Her paternal grandparents were John Crosland and Elizabeth. She had three brothers and three sisters, named William, John, Richard, Elizabeth, Martha and Ann.  She was the youngest of the seven children.
