Ellen's father was Edmund (Edward) Crosland and her mother was Nancy Sykes.  Her paternal grandparents were John Crosland and Elizabeth.  Daniel Crosland and Mary Kinder were her grandparents through her father's adoption. She had three brothers and three sisters, named William, John, Richard, Elizabeth, Martha and Ann.  She was the youngest of the seven children.
