Richard was born in 1829 in Upperthong.1  Richard's father was Edmund (Edward) Crosland and his mother was Nancy Sykes.  His paternal grandparents were John Crosland and Elizabeth. He had two brothers and four sisters, named William, John, Elizabeth, Martha, Ann and Ellen.  He was the fifth oldest of the seven children.
