John's father was Edmund (Edward) Crosland and his mother was Nancy Sykes.  His paternal grandparents were John Crosland and Elizabeth.  Daniel Crosland and Mary Kinder were his grandparents through his father's adoption. He had two brothers and four sisters, named William, Richard, Elizabeth, Martha, Ann and Ellen.  He was the second oldest of the seven children.
