Tom was born in 1857 in Austonley.1   Tom's father was Jonathan Crosland and his mother was Elizabeth Winpenny.  His paternal grandparents were Joseph Crosland and Jane Sykes. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Sam, Jonathan, Mary, Ann and Jane.  He was the oldest of the six children. He had a half-brother named John.
