Mary was born in 1860 in Austonley.1   Mary's father was Jonathan Crosland and her mother was Elizabeth Winpenny.  Her paternal grandparents were Joseph Crosland and Jane Sykes. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Tom, Sam, Jonathan, Ann and Jane.  She was the third oldest of the six children. She had a half-brother named John.
