Joseph was born in 1773 in Austonley and his baptism took place on April 11th, 1773 in Almondbury.1  Joseph's father was James Crosland and his mother was <Unknown>. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Jonathan, John, Lydia, Hannah and Betty.  He was the fourth oldest of the seven known children.
