John was born in 1777 in Austonley and his baptism took place on November 1st, 1777 in Almondbury.1  John's father was James Crosland and his mother was <Unknown>. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Jonathan, Joseph, Lydia, Hannah and Betty.  He was the fifth oldest of the seven known children.
