Sam was born in September 1853 in Lindley.1  Sam's father was John Crosland and his mother was Mary Davison.  His paternal grandparents were Ard Crosland and Phoebe Drake. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Joel, Tom, Luther, Phoebe and Clara.  He was the third oldest of the six children. He had two half-brothers and two half-sisters, named John, Lewis, Lucy and Ann.  He died at 3 months old in December 1853 in Lindley.1
