Luther was born on December 14th, 1859 in Lindley and his baptism took place on June 14th, 1860 in Highfield (Independent).1 2  Luther's father was John Crosland and his mother was Mary Davison.  His paternal grandparents were Ard Crosland and Phoebe Drake. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Joel, Sam, Tom, Phoebe and Clara.  He was the youngest of the six children. He had two half-brothers and two half-sisters, named John, Lewis, Lucy and Ann.
