William was born in 1809 in Silkstone and his baptism took place there on December 10th, 1809.1  William's father was Charles Crosland and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Armitage. He had a brother and a sister, named Charles and Sarah.  He was the oldest of the three known children.
