Edwin's father was John Crosland and his mother was Mary Wilkinson. He had seven brothers and five sisters, named Edward, Joseph, Ard, James, John, Law, George, Jane, Hannah, Bessy, Mary and Sarah. Edwin and Mary were twins. He died at the age of 57 in 1893.
