Joseph was born on November 9th, 1816 in Lindley and his baptism took place on November 23rd, 1816 at Lindley Zion Chapel.1 2  Joseph's father was John Crosland and his mother was Mary Wilkinson. He had seven brothers and five sisters, named Edward, Ard, James, John, Law, George, Edwin, Jane, Hannah, Bessy, Mary and Sarah.
