Dear Nephew,
We duly received your kind letter of the 12th July and we were all very happy to again hear from you. I fear you will begin to think us very unkind in not answering it sooner but we have been very busy in the hay. We have now finished with a very good crop and this is the first opportunity have had to set by to your. We were all very sorry to hear your sad and affecting history after the death of your poor father for you must have had a deal of trouble to go through – We never before heard that your mother got married again. In answer to your inquiry about your Uncle- Edward his name is Kay, not Crossland Your Father had two Brothers living in Bradford near Leeds when he left England named George and Joseph Crossland. Joseph your father’s oldest brother is dead, his youngest brother George was a shoemaker but we have not heard anything of him for twenty years. I am sorry to say the letter is lost that we received about your brother William’s death. I think he died at the place you last heard of him, it also stated he died at the house of a friend and he was the only person in the world to sooth his dying friend—if you ever hear or see any one from that part you might gain some information. We have forwarded your letter to your Grandmother and Uncle William and they were all very happy to again hear from you. I am sorry I cannot send you our Photographs in this letter, I hope to have one or two ready before your next but if you have got yours be sure and send it in your next but if you have ys and also your brothers if you have them. All your relations here join me in kindest love hoping Lord will still bless and protect you is the sincere wishes of your aunt and Uncle.
