John was born on February 27th, 1831 in Lindley and his baptism took place on February 27th, 1831 in Salendine Nook Meeting House (Baptist).1  John's father was Beaumont Crosland and his mother was Sarah (Sally) Brook.  His paternal grandparents were Edward Crosland and Mary (Mercy) Beaumont. He had four brothers and two sisters, named William, Joe, Alfred, Edward, Sarah and Mary.  He was the third oldest of the seven children.
