Alfred's father was Beaumont Crosland and his mother was Sarah (Sally) Brook. His paternal grandparents were Edward Crosland and Mary (Mercy) Beaumont. He had four brothers and two sisters, named William, Joe, John, Edward, Sarah and Mary. He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
