Alfred was born on August 5th, 1833 in Lindley and his baptism took place on August 5th, 1833 in Salendine Nook Meeting House (Baptist).1 2  Alfred's father was Beaumont Crosland and his mother was Sarah (Sally) Brook.  His paternal grandparents were Edward Crosland and Mary (Mercy) Beaumont. He had four brothers and two sisters, named William, Joe, John, Edward, Sarah and Mary.  He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.

‌Alfred and Sarah were married in a civil ceremony in December 1854 in Huddersfield.3   They had four sons and two daughters, named John, Norris, Beaumont, Zachariah, Mary and Harriet.  There are no more children.
