Charles was born in 1835 in Barnsley.1  Charles' father was John Crosland and his mother was Ann (Nanny) Townend.  His paternal grandparents were Joseph Crosland and Ann Darwent. He had eight brothers and four sisters, named Robert, John, Fred, Job, Albert, Sam, Everett, Arthur, Harriet, Hannah, Emma and Eliza.  He was the oldest of the thirteen known children.
