Fred was born in December 1848 in Ecclesfield.1  Fred's father was John Crosland and his mother was Ann (Nanny) Townend.  His paternal grandparents were Joseph Crosland and Ann Darwent. He had eight brothers and four sisters, named Charles, Robert, John, Job, Albert, Sam, Everett, Arthur, Harriet, Hannah, Emma and Eliza.  He was the eighth oldest of the thirteen known children.
