John's father was Joseph Crosland and his mother was Ann Darwent. He was an only child. He died at the age of 78 on March 25th, 1887.

  In 1871, the census has John born in Sunderland, Durham (which is different to all other census records). If true, he may be the son of George Crosland and Sarah Jones of Doncaster, born 19 June 1809.
