John was born in November 1843 in Barnsley and his baptism took place on November 5th, 1843 at St. Mary (Barnsley).1  John's father was John Crosland and his mother was Ann (Nanny) Townend.  His paternal grandparents were Joseph Crosland and Ann Darwent. He had eight brothers and four sisters, named Charles, Robert, Fred, Job, Albert, Sam, Everett, Arthur, Harriet, Hannah, Emma and Eliza.  He was the fifth oldest of the thirteen known children.
