Emma's father was John Crosland and her mother was Ann (Nanny) Townend.  Her paternal grandparents were Joseph Crosland and Ann Darwent. She had nine brothers and three sisters, named Charles, Robert, John, Fred, Job, Albert, Sam, Everett, Arthur, Harriet, Hannah and Eliza.  She was the sixth oldest of the thirteen known children.
