Hellen was born in 1726 in Lindley and her baptism took place on June 1st, 1726 in Huddersfield.1  Hellen's father was John Crosland Snr and her mother was Anne Royd. She had five brothers and two sisters, and also a sibling of unknown gender, named Charles, Joseph, John, Luke, Titus, Sarah, Alice and <child>.  She was the youngest of the nine children.
